Abras 10km Race 1

Posted by on October 26, 2012

Despite this being an Eid weekend, with many UAE residents heading for short breaks, a good field turned out for the 1st of the popular ABRaS race series. Conditions were a little “muggy” but this did not stop several good performances from the Milers with runners picking up prizes as individuals, seven runners posting top 5 finishes in their categories and Chris, Ben & Dorian (who is now officially an old man) once again winning the veterans team prize and finishing 3rd in the open team event.

As the prizes were being announced a runner did say to me that you we seem to be a running club that consists of older runners. And I guess there is some truth to that if the results are anything to go by. But we do have some up and coming younger runners but we need you out at races!

Dave Jackson shaved 14 seconds from his recent Desert 10 km run and is looking very fit, having come back from the summer, by his own admission, a tad under-trained. Today’s run came off the back of a P.B. around Mushrif on Monday so its looking good for a season of strong runs.

Dorian is coming back from injury but the day out at RAK is a distant memory now as he is returning to form and produced a sub 40 minute run along with Ben.

Chris was a little down on his previous times but having just completed a marathon that was to be expected and now he can get back to the Wednesday intervals to recapture his speed.

Anne Hubert was moving up a notch from her normal distance so her finishing time was very credible. Elaine was also quicker than both her runs on the same course last year.

As for myself I have been suffering from a niggling hamstring for about 2 weeks which finally decided to go into complete free-fall on me at about 8 km. Also I note that my race position was 4th and not 3rd and I have done the decent thing and alerted the ABRaS race committee! I am just pleased that Dave was not closer as he is a true competitive Miler and I am sure would not have even broken stride as he went by me as I limped toward the finish. But to be fair if the roles were reversed, neither would I!

Well done to Stephen for posting a top 5 finish and Anne Scaddon for 2nd place in her category.
